Understanding US laws on everything EXPORT can be challenging. Adhering to Export Best Practices means having a thorough understanding of US laws that apply to activities occurring outside of the US. This includes the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) – the law prohibiting bribery and improper sales solicitation, and US antiboycott laws which prohibit US companies from complying with other countries’ boycotts that the US does not support. If you export, you need to know both!

Joan A. Akalaonu: Associate, Faegre Drinker
Joan Akalaonu is a senior business litigation associate in the Chicago Office of Faegre Drinker Biddle & Reath, LLP. In her practice, Joan counsels clients through all steps in complex commercial litigation in both federal and state court. As a member of the firm’s Foreign Corrupt Practice Act (FCPA) team, Joan also advises and represents clients through FCPA internal investigations and compliance and remediation matters and represents clients in responding to FCPA-related inquiries from the government. Joan has written a number of articles regarding lessons and takeaways from recent FCPA enforcement actions.
Matt Levy: Partner, Faegre Drinker
Matt is a Partner in the firm’s Corporate Practice with a focus on cross-border transactions and international trade. He has experience in more than 40 countries helping both public and private companies expand and operate internationally. He advises on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, inbound and outbound foreign direct investment, corporate reorganizations, export controls and trade sanctions compliance (EAR, ITAR and OFAC programs), and US and foreign antitrust. He acts as a business advisor to his clients and delivers practical solutions to complex problems. Matt previously lived in China and speaks and reads Mandarin.
