Anne W. Burkett is the Director of Planning and Economic Development for the Madison County
Commission. Her department is responsible for developing, implementing, managing, and evaluating
economic and community development programs, including the nationally and internationally
recognized International Trade Development Center for Madison County. She has over 35 years of
experience in economic and international trade development.
The Madison County Commission International Trade Development Center (ITDC) is committed to
export promotion and expansion as a strategy for economic development. As a cooperative
public/private joint venture between county government and industry, the program strives to
"internationalize" the economic base of the county. The underlying premise of this effort is that the
survival of any community depends on its ability to compete in the increasingly complex global
economic environment and how effectively existing and expanding industries can diversify their
Ms. Burkett is a charter member, past president, and current Executive Director and Secretary of the
North Alabama International Trade Association (NAITA), member of the executive committee of the
Alabama Export Council, board member of the National Association of District Export Councils
(NADEC) and serves on the Economic Development Advisory Committee for the HudsonAlpha Institute
for Biotechnology. She is also an active member of the International Economic Development Council,
the Japan America Society of Alabama, the Alabama-Germany Partnership, the Economic
Development Association of Alabama, Global Ties Alabama, NDIA Women in Defense, the Women's
Economic Development Council of North Alabama, and an alumni of Leadership Huntsville/Madison
County and the FBI Citizens Academy.
Ms. Burkett is a graduate of Auburn University with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and International
Trade. She also had undergraduate work at the University of Madrid, Madrid, Spain. Professional
development coursework has been completed through the American Graduate School of International
Management (Thunderbird), American Management Association, the International
Marketing/Management Certificate Program - University of Alabama in Huntsville, and the American
Economic Development Council's Economic Development Institute. In 1993, she was selected by the
Japanese government to participate in the Export to Japan Study Program in Tokyo. In 2001, she was
selected by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce to participate in the Traderoots International Trade
Leadership Program in Washington, DC. In 2016, she was selected by the British Embassy in
Washington, DC to participate in the Transatlantic Trade & Investment Partnership (TTIP) Business
Ambassador’s Program. Ms. Burkett is a Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) as designated
by NASBITE International.
